For those of us who were lucky enough to grow up in the Rathcoole, Saggart and Newcastle area of county Dublin, you will know it as the “Old Library”.
The scene itself goes back to the “Big Snow” of January 1982 when Rathcoole was cut off for a week from the rest of the world…..well, at least Dublin anyway….. due to heavy snow and ice that brought the Naas dual carriageway to a halt.
Stranded business men, emptied Cappaquin Chicken lorries and Dinny Dunne selling milk straight from the farm were all apart of that brilliant week.
I vividly remember this scene as I walked home one night through the village, on my way home from another well know landmark….Muldowneys.
The phone box in the scene also played a large part in a lot of our lives, as it was the only public phone in the village, a venue where many a date was made and many a heart was broken. Who remembers “tapping” the phone number to save 10p and get a free call???
